Is Hurricane Helene America’s Chernobyl?

Almost a week after the storm, “the clock is ticking for many Americans trapped without food, water, or means of communication.” Writing from the scene of what he calls “a disaster of biblical dimensions,” the perceptive Malcolm Kyeyune explains that the failed rescue effort shows that the system itself is failing, just as the 1986 Chernobyl disaster showed for the then-Soviet Union.  It is a reflective piece well worth your time to read and absorb.

Compared with Katrina, “Bush’s response was criticized, but the relief effort being mounted now is a pale shadow of what was done a mere 19 years ago.” Three hundred-fifty helicopters rescued the stranded during Katrina, for instance. Now, when far more are needed, less than 100 have been committed. The disaster area is a stone’s throw from two of our biggest Army forts, but they are of little help. The name of the Department of Defense implies that it exists to defend Americans, but it can do very little to rescue then now, because its forces are being held in reserve for foreign deployments.

Rather than cruelty, Kyeyune sees plain obliviousness, blindness towards endangered Americans. As when Biden just said, “They have everything they need. They’re very happy.” Or, when the fake candidate for President, Kamala Harris tells people who have lost everything that this government will give them $750, if they qualify.

The author paints a devastating picture of our current state as a nation.  It is why Donald Trump says that we are a nation in decline.  Unlike Donald Trump, Kyeyune does not pose a ready solution. But there is a solution.
