Lies and Fake Questions: Michigan Democrat Congressman’s Town Hall Exposed

Local activists, including leaders of the 13th Congressional GOP and Promethean Action organizers, brought reality into Rep. Shri Thanedar’s (D, MI) February 28 Town Hall meeting at a Senior Center in a suburb of Detroit.

Not only did they confront him on his lies about President Trump’s support for Social Security and Medicare, but they caught one of his staffers writing out fake questions in order to control the discussion.

"DOGE, the tool of billionaires."

Democratic Congressmen have been conducting town halls and demonstrations around the country, pushing the lie that DOGE is a tool of billionaires, led by Elon Musk, and is being deployed against the poor and vulnerable, and that Donald Trump wants to cut Social Security and Medicare.

That flies in the face of facts and of the 2024 Republican Party Platform.

Point 15 of the “20 Promises” summary of the platform says the following:

“Protect Social Security and Medicare with no cuts and no changes to the retirement age.”

Precinct delegate and Promethean activist Jim Duree arrived at the meeting early and distributed the flyers documenting Trump’s and the GOP’s commitment to Social Security to many of the 100 or so attendees.

When the Congressman entered, Duree asked him directly,

“Why are you lying about President Trump and Social Security.”

Thanedar didn’t answer, but at that point, he, or more probably his staff, realized the jig was up.

Legacy Party Politics Is Over

While the meeting was composed of a majority of Democratic diehards, there was a significant minority of people interested in finding out the truth.

The 13th Congressional Republicans were also in attendance in force, led by outgoing Chair Cheryl Costantino (who was just elected as Administrative Vice Chair of the state party) and incoming chair Alexandria Taylor. 

Marcus Watkins, a 13th CD delegate in attendance, accurately described the content of Thanedar’s remarks in a Facebook post:

It was unbelievable and disgusting how much he lied to his constituents here in this district. It’s clear that Democrats are back to emotional blackmail. The “Everyone is going to die if we don’t make government bigger” tactic is fully at play. Rep. Thanedar spent the entire meeting just bashing Trump and Republicans as well as using fear mongering. He didn’t give any of his constituents any alternative proposals or solutions. It was all “ORANGE MAN BAD.” “WE HAVE TO STOP ELON.” His answer to everything was to IMPEACH TRUMP, RESIST and PROTEST! 

The attempt to keep the meeting on the pre-arranged script, by only allowing written and vetted questions, was blown open when Costantino caught one of Thanedar’s staffers outside the meeting, writing a fake constituent question on an index card.

She texted the picture to people in the meeting, and Duree stood up and said,

“These questions which you are answering are bogus, you are not asking the real, critical questions.  One of your staff members is out in the hall writing out bogus questions for you to answer.  I have a photograph right here of him doing that!  Why do you continue to lie about President Trump's policies on Social Security?”

Hubbub ensued and while Thanedar didn’t answer that question (again), the meeting was then opened up to live questions.

The Congressman was put on the spot more than once and the controlled environment was broken.
